A funeral celebrant is someone qualified to host and officiate funeral services. As well as conducting the funeral itself (which may or may not include religious or spiritual elements), celebrants are involved in planning the order of service, music, writing the eulogy and creating a meaningful service for the person who has died.

One of the biggest benefits of a celebrant-led funeral is their openness and inclusivity and freedom from structure. It recognises that each life is a rich and diverse story, one that overlaps and connects with the life stories of family, friends and the wider community. , and one that should be celebrated as such. This allows you to create a ceremony that helps you both honour and celebrate the unique life of your loved one.

An important part of my role as a celebrant is to help you draw out the key elements of your loved one’s unique life story, those beautiful and meaningful interactions with the life stories that it overlaps. For example:-

  • Where you loved one was born and grew up
  • Important early family relationships
  • School days & childhood stories
  • Closest friends
  • College and University experiences
  • Career plans & places of work
  • Groups & societies belonged to
  • Interests & achievements
  • Favourite memories
  • Favourite music, films, TV, sports etc.
  • Significant events
  • Sayings & stories
  • What will you most remember them for?
  • Any personal requests by your loved one
  • Will anybody else be participating in the service?

Sharing photographs of your loved one in the service is a very popular way of honouring and celebrating the uniqueness of their life, especially when paired with a meaningful piece of music. As your celebrant, I can help put together a series of precious images and will ensure they are appropriately displayed with any accompanying music as part of the funeral.

That is entirely your choice. Many people leave the majority of the funeral to the celebrant, which is perfectly normal and understandable given the circumstances. Should you wish a family member or friend to contribute, I can help advise and make recommendations on content and delivery – and if required, deliver this on their behalf.

Naturally there is an order to the day, however it is entirely your choice should you wish to provide a printed order of service as a keepsake and to help guide those present through the proceedings. Your funeral director will liaise with you in this area.

Yes, I can hold a service of commemoration or celebration of life wherever and whenever you wish it to be.
